Bygone Bars with New York Adventure Club
We are excited to announce a new endeavor with our friends at New York Adventure Club! Join us on Friday, October 10 at 8:00pm for our Bygone Bars of NYC: A History of Lost Saloons & Literary Legends virtual event. Our guides Eric Chase & Robert A. K. Gonyo will be your hosts! Join us in exploring the histories, the legends, and the luminaries of lost saloons, and how they helped to shape iconic cultural and literary neighborhoods as we know them today. Drinking and writing have gone hand in hand since the first fermented berries were discovered in the Neolithic period, which could be used for both drinking and cave painting. Fact: this has been scientifically proven. Source: I’m sure we can find the article again. Caves, the initial gathering hole for writers, were quickly upgraded to the tavern, bar, or public house. While many were once cultural institutions, sadly the destructive nature of earthquakes, fires, wars, economics, and gentrification have torn apart many of these iconic establishments, leaving us only memories, some titillating tales, and legendary literature. Learn about some of Greenwich Village’s legendary literary bars like Polly’s, Mad Hatter, Pfaff’s, Chumley’s, and Cafe Society, along with the writers who called these bars home and the works they produced between rounds. After registering, you’ll receive a recipe to make a featured cocktail (or mocktail) to join us in a toast from the comfort of your own sofa, bed, rocking chair, or bean bag. If you are not free on Friday, October 10 at 8:00pm, but still wish to see our beautiful mugs, please register for the replay, which will be available up to one week after the event.
